PROGRAM NAME: Australian Centre for Science, Innovation and Society (ACSIS)
PROGRAM TYPE: Research center
DESCRIPTION: An initiative of the University of Melbourne's Faculties of Arts and Engineering, ACSIS performs contract-based research on "innovations that arise from the interaction between technological, social and economic change. Initial technologies of interest are biotechnology, small scale technology (including nano scale technology) and information and communication technology. Social and economic drivers being considered include environmental sustainability and ageing populations within cities." The program is supported by the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science; Architecture, Building and Planning; as well as by the Bio21 Institute. Ultimately, it will function as the hub of a network of collaborators, including the Victorian and Australian governments; local, national and international research centres; business; and community organisations.
