The applicant is expected to have a demonstrated research record in public policy aspects of energy supply and/or demand. This position is a part of a cluster hire, along with similar searches in economics and in political science, all coordinated by the UM Center for the Study of Complex Systems. The UCSD Department of Communication announces a tenure track position in Communication and the Person at the Assistant Professor level beginning July 1, 2009. The position includes participation in our interdisciplinary undergraduate and Ph.D. programs.

The department seeks a candidate with a research track record in studying in depth the details of different practices and activity systems. We invite applications from candidates working in any research field; but who approach their research topics with qualitative methods and a foundation in theories of practice and activity (including, but not limited to, activity theory, ethnomethodology, and actor network theory). We seek a candidate who both understands contemporary theories of practice and activity yet can place these theories in an empirical context.

Applications from candidates whose research engages the intersections of technology and communication - broadly conceived - are especially welcomed. Such research may include (but is not limited to):

Serious play: Understanding the developing worlds of online interaction and play - including games and online virtual environments.

Software, design and communication: Detailed studies of the practices of software design: studies of how software can support new forms of workplace and informal communication.

Political communication: Investigations of the growing use of technology in political discourse and debate.

These interests will correspond with the department's strengths in studying new technology, learning and the interplay of complex activity systems.

A Ph.D. in a related discipline to communications, along with a publication track record, is a pre-requisite.

The Institute for the Study of Science, Technology & Innovation (ISSTI) at the University of Edinburgh seeks applicants for three new positions:

This is a tenure-track, nine-month career position in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, Division of Society and Environment, and the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of California at Berkeley, available July 1, 2007.

The successful candidate will have an earned doctoral degree in a relevant field such as (but not limited to) the social sciences; science, technology, and society (STS); the history of science and technology; science studies; environmental studies; or public policy studies. An emphasis on emerging technologies is preferred.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop a nationally-recognized research program on the interaction of science, technology, and the environment. Candidates should have an interest in the social processes, ecological implications, and distributional and equity impacts of science and technological change. The candidate's research should explore the ways in which science and its applications - e.g., emerging biological, chemical, energy, and nanotechnologies - both shape and are shaped by politics, regulation, and governing institutions. Questions of control, access, and power should be core concerns. Within this broad purview, research topics might include: the implications of new technologies for race, gender, and class relations; technology, immigration, and the global economy; chemical technologies and environmental health; the regulation of transgenic organisms and nanoparticles; relations between science, technology, and governance; the political, ecological, and ethical aspects of genomic sciences for agriculture, forestry, and/or fisheries; the global, regional, and local politics of science and technology policy formation.

The successful candidate will teach an undergraduate course on Society and Environment, a graduate course in his/her area of specialization, and share in teaching departmental lower and upper division undergraduate courses. We are looking for a candidate who can contribute to the departmental strength in transnational/global dimensions of science and technology. Particular areas of interest are environmental studies, global trade and finance, development and sustainability; and peace and conflict studies. The candidate’s background may be in quantitative or qualitative methods, or both. Posted 9/4/07 Tenure Track Faculty Position in Environmental Policy A new tenure-track assistant professor position in Environmental Policy is now open in McDaniel’s Environmental Policy and Science Program. Working collaboratively with faculty from the environmental, political and social sciences departments, the successful candidate is encouraged to teach hands-on courses that demonstrate the linkages between environmental science, policy and economics. Preferred areas of research interest, involving students when possible, include water rights, urbanization, conservation, environmental crisis management, environmental conflict/ migration, or hazardous contamination. This individual will play a leadership role in EPS, responsible for both majors and non-majors offerings in EPS and Political Science, research and program development. A Ph.D. in Environmental Science/Policy, Political Science, Geography, Regional Planning, Economics or a related field is preferred. Previous experience in teaching environmental policy is strongly desired.
